National Poetry Month is in April: Summer in the City

In February 2013, I published my very first children’s book! It was probably one of the scariest, most rewarding…scariest (I am repeating that for emphasis) things I’ve ever done. I invested pretty much my life savings into not only taking my idea from a Microsoft Word document to print, but I also started my own publishing company, Willa’s Tree Studios, LLC! I have to say, it has been quite a journey. You know the saying, “You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only option,” well that pretty sums up my last two years. I was tested in so many ways— financially, professionally, emotionally… because even though I was fighting to bring a dream alive, there was still life (and bills, a full-time job, family, friends and all of the things that come with them). Needless to say, as I hit my two year mark, I am just as inspired today as I was when I decided that I was going to take on this crazy endeavor. As an independent publisher, I’ve encountered my (very) fair share of challenges and setbacks. But, with over 2,000 copies of Summer in the City sold, I’m not doing too shabby! People LOVE my story! And they love it for many reasons the story mixed with these vibrant images literally take you back into time!

So, here it is, a video posting of me reading my first children’s book, Summer in the City. If you enjoy it, please feel free to check it out! You can buy it on Amazon (dreaming of one day being in the top 100), or you can purchase it directly from website. All orders shipped directly from me get a signed copy of the book and a small but special “throwback” gift as a token of my appreciation.

If you already have a copy of Summer in the City, or if you are planning to buy it, feel free to download the Summer in the City Reader’s Companion for *free. It is full of a variety of activities that you can use to get the most out of this story. I use them in my classroom and share them during author visits and the kids (and their teachers) love them!
